I never really thought of it as a "movement" per se, but historically the skeptic community has been linked heavily to atheism and both took heavy hits during and after Elevatorgate. Then it was just one thing after another with Dawkins etc. So yeah, the figureheads definitely stank the joint up these recent years.

Even with the culture wars factor atheists tend to have "pedestal clique" stigma at the best of times, similar to MENSA members.
